What Are Powder Fire Extinguishers Used For?
Powder fire extinguishers present a highly versatile option when it comes to tackling fires. Sometimes referred to by the name ‘dry chemical’ extinguishers or ABC extinguishers, powder extinguishers can be identified by their blue label and are available in several sizes, from 1kg up to 9kg.Â
But what exactly can they be used for?Â
At Fire Safety Equipment, we stock powder fire extinguishers and are pleased to bring you more details on which buildings and situations they can come in handy for.
When do you need a powder fire extinguisher?
As the ABC name indicates, they’re great for tackling a variety of fire classes:Â
- Class A – flammable solids like paper, textiles and woodÂ
- Class B – flammable liquids like paint, petrol and diesel
- Class C – flammable gases like methane, propane and butane
In addition to the above, dry powder fire extinguishers can also be used on electrical equipment fires, but only up to 1,000 volts. You should never use this extinguisher type for cooking fires involving oil or grease or electrical fires involving more than 1,000 volts.Â
Due to their ability to cover a number of risks, powder extinguishers are popular in a multitude of settings. From petrol station forecourts and fuel tankers to larger commercial premises such as open-air workshops and boiler rooms, it’s commonly a piece of fire safety equipment sited in outdoor environments or where there aren’t commonly people stationed — find out why in the next section below.Â
How do powder fire extinguishers work?
Firstly, it’s important to remember that you should only try to tackle small fires, regardless of the extinguisher type; if the blaze has become too large, always evacuate the area and alert the authorities immediately.
Using a powder fire extinguisher means that large quantities of the chemical powder will be released into the air. This both reduces visibility for anyone in the space and also presents a real risk of inhalation — this is why it’s commonly used in outdoor spaces instead. The powder is a dry chemical mixture used to coat whatever is fuelling the fire, preventing oxygen from reaching it and thereby breaking the fire triangle.
Here are the steps for using a powder fire extinguisher safely:
1. First, pull the safety pin, breaking any tamper seal
2. Squeeze the handle of the unit to release the dry powder
3. Aim the nozzle, with a specific focus depending on the type of fire:
– For solid materials, aim at the base of the fire in a sweeping motion, from side to side
– For spilt liquids, begin at your nearest edge and sweep sideways, moving forwards to extinguish more and more of the fire
– For gases, first turn off the supply of the gas and aim the nozzle at the flare of the fire
– For electrical items, if you can do it safely, turn off the power and then aim the powder directly at the fire
4. Keep sweeping the area until the unit is empty; this provides coverage and helps to reduce the risk of reignition of the fireÂ
How often should a powder fire extinguisher be maintained?
BS 5306 is the British Standard that provides guidance on fire extinguisher testing and maintenance. According to these standards, a basic service should be carried out on powder fire extinguishers annually (once every twelve months) with an extended service carried out every five years. This should be carried out by a qualified and competent specialist, ensuring the unit is fit for purpose and hasn’t lost any charge.
Visual inspections should be carried out regularly by the responsible person or building owner/manager. This helps to spot any signs of deterioration or damage on the unit that may require attention.
