How Often Should You Replace a Fire Extinguisher?
Fire extinguishers are vital for your defence against fire and are part of your legal duty to provide adequate fire safety equipment. To uphold this duty, your extinguishers will also need to be in top condition at all times so that they can be used effectively in the event of a fire.
But how often should you replace a fire extinguisher? That’s what we’re going to tackle this month, along with a few other frequently asked questions on this topic.
Why might my extinguishers need servicing or replacement?
As outlined in BS 5306-3, the Responsible Person within your building or business is accountable for the working state and good repair of fire extinguishers, which means either servicing or replacing them when they encounter the following:
- Blockages
- Leaks
- Worn labels
- Running out of charge
- Accidental damage
Servicing and replacement schedules for fire extinguishers
According to the table provided as part of the aforementioned British Standard covering maintenance for fire extinguishers, all units should undergo a basic service each year.
Water extinguishers should be given an extended service every five years, along with Class D and Class F extinguishers. A full overhaul is only recommended for CO2 units and this should be done at least every 10 years. It is an offence to even possess halon fire extinguishers.
While extended services are required every five years for most extinguishers, it is advised that you replace your extinguishers before they reach 20 years of age. This means, ideally, any extinguisher should only ever have a maximum of three extended services before being replaced. It is highly likely that you will need to replace them long before this point, but a qualified and trained professional can give you further advice on this when servicing your extinguishers.
Do all fire extinguishers need to be serviced?
Yes, all fire extinguishers should be given a basic service annually by a competent person to ensure they are in full working order for when you need them most, along with extended service checks at the recommended interval. A visual inspection should be performed monthly by the Responsible Person to ensure they have not been moved, damaged or accidentally discharged.
Where should fire extinguishers be located?
The position of fire extinguishers will vary from building to building in accordance with the different threats and the size of the space. However, fire extinguishers need to be within easy reach at all times, so you shouldn’t have to go more than 30 metres to get to a unit or 10 metres for a wet chemical extinguisher to be used in a flammable liquid fire.
You should also make sure nothing is placed in front of the extinguishers that would hide them from sight or restrict access.
